¿WHAT ARE THE SOILS SUITABLE FOR ALMENDRILLO?

Its a specie that forms part of tropical rainforest that adapts well on loam and clay soils with low acidity  and proper drainage.


¿HOW DOES ALMENDRILLO DEVELOP?

The tree is caracterized for its straight trunk and wide treetop. It can reach an height of 25 to 35 meter and a diameter of 150 cm. It posseses wide prominent buttresses and a brown cortex of a rigid consistency.


¿WHAT ARE THE UTILITIES OF THE TIMBER?

The brown-yellow colored timber is mostly used in the constructions of ships, sheets of veneer, parquet, plywood and beams.


¿WHAT DOES THE ALMENDRILLO SEED LOOK LIKE?

The fruit has a green-silver color and is 4 to 6 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide. It contains a ovoid shaped seed inside of 2 to 3 cm long.


¿WHEN AND HOW DOES ONE RECOLLECT ITS SEED?

Its posible to observe the trees in full flowering between the month of November and December. The fruit  is collected in the months of August till October. It iis recomended to gather the fruit fallen from the tree.

 

¿HOW TO ESTABLISH IN THE FIELD?

Almendrillo is generally established in plantations combined with other species of medium term growth. The plantation is established with seedlings prepared in nurseries.

Holes are digged of 20 cm deep and 20 cm wide (20 x 20).  For the planting the bag is removed from the seedling and after planting the earth around the plant is tamped to avoid airbags that provoce bad root growth.
